October 31, 2005: umlaut, egrave, eacute etc. Make them work in Apache
Here's a quick fix for extended characters in APache on Linux. If your local apache server is not displaying your accents etc. set the default charset to utf8: AddDefaultCharset UTF-8. Search for AddDefaultCharset in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. You probably need to be root to update the file.
Let me start by saying that the people who develop Red Hat Fedora do a remarkable job, and that they're probably already working on this problem. That said, I need to launch into a gripe about how it sucks that Fedora does not come with a system SLEEP, or Energy saver of any sort. NO, I don't have a laptop, and yes, it probably does work out of the box on a laptop. It SHOULD also work out of the box on a desktop machine.
October 29, 2005: Power Managment Gripe
If I really wanted to spend weeks, I could figure out how to get ACPID running properly, once I figure out how to patch and reinstall the kernel... But I should not have to deal with a kernel install or rebuild just to make my server turn off the monitor, spin down the drive, and put the CPU and fans to sleep while wating for a keystroke or network call to wake everything up. Linux is striving to be a user friendly desktop environment. One of those user friendly things is being able to keep your computer on without sucking voltage while you're away.
October 25, 2005: Ghost 4 Unix vs Ghost 4 Linux
Not to take sides in the Copyright issue between the authors of g4l and g4u, but I tried both today, and found that Ghost 4 Unix actually works, wheras the other does not. It could have been a config issue of some sort, but all I know is that I downloaded both ISO's, burned them (on my Mac, since it has a working burner) and tried making a copy of my Linux box's harddrive with each. G4L said it was starting, but just sat there for five minutes. I finally got tired of waiting for anything to happen, and switched to G4U. Click here for the Ghost 4 Unix website.
October 23, 2005: Kathie and Clayton got Married!
Kathie and Clayton, sitting in a tree ... Yes, they kissed A LOT. It was a wonderful wedding, held in Eric and Diana's backyard. The cermony was nice, the families were friendly, though some were a little curious about those sissified folk wearin' their ancient girly clothes.
October 22, 2005: New Bricolage Server UP!
No, this is not déjà vu. I just finished installing bricolage on my new linux server, and got the postgres database ported over (rather crudely, but effectively) and now I'm publishing on a much more powerful production box!
October 20, 2005: GIGO
I cannot stress how important it is to have a good foundation for any installs done in Linux/Unix. I mistakenly interpreted a note about how I could use the default install of Postgresql in Fedora, to mean that the default install of PERL would also work for my Bricolage install. Well, live, learn, wipe the drive and re-install when your Perl Libraries are beyond sorting out. I needed to repartition the drive anyway.
The flooring Guys showed up on time -- 9ish. We explained what had to still be moved, and were told that the fridge and the oven would cost to move. We'd been told that was included in the price, which got us off to a bad start. A little work on my part though, and they were on their way to installing our floor.
October 17, 2005: Pergo Day
I came home in time to get some little details ironed out before the installers went away, and our floor was done! Quite beautiful too.
October 16, 2005: Prep Day for Pergo floors.
Fighter Practice turned into a chat session, followed by good friends helping Annette and me get stuff moved out of the Kitchen and Living room to prepare for the Pergo Guys on Monday. As a side benefit, Mitch took out more of his armoring stuff fromthe garage, freeing storage for the stuff in the other rooms, and leaving space when it was all done.
October 15, 2005: Leon and Murigheal's wedding
It was a nice wedding: short and pretty. Pictures to come soon.
October 13, 2005: Torvald's Knees
Our friend Torvald has a reputation for getting injured. He's even heard his name used to describe a whole category of injuries. Here's a story I was actually involved in.
October 12, 2005: Hating the Gnome
like turd flavored icing on a turd flavored cake, Gnome just makes my head want to explode just a little more ...
October 8, 2005: Vinhold Harvest Feast
The feast was great, the food excellent, and the company was friendly. The head cook was cooking her very first feast, and did a wonderful job. The Baron, Timothy still thinks he has one of my hats... a perception he's had for a couple of years now. Angus MacStagger passed the office of Bard to Torvaldr Torgarson who did an excellent job of regailing us with stories and skaldic verse. Torvaldr's competition was by no means lacking, I was particulary touched by Madam Gislain's tale of Arthurian romance.
October 6, 2005: Fighting for Consorts
This is a general statement about my view of the SCA, including how fighting is structured, the checks and balances involved in our "honor" system, as well as some historical perspective, as I remember it from the Frances Gies book, The Knight in History.
October 6, 2005: A week's gone by? Already?
This week just flew by. It's Thursday night, I could have sworn the weekend just finished. At least this means I get a paycheck tomorrow.
October 4, 2005: new shoes started
My green "period elf boots", as I like to call them, are wearing out, so I started working on another pair. This time, I'm using thicker leather, hand stitching, re-inforcing the sole with a rubbery-plastic material of Degan's, and may even stitch on a thick leather sole. I'm sure it was done in period as a quick fix for worn out shoes.
October 3, 2005: all's quiet on the home front
After a weekend of having guests overnight, and running around all day at a tourney, it occured to me that the cats were behaving very well together since Junior got snipped. I guess I was right, testosterone, territory, and toys were the issue.
